Intrigued by brioche stitch projects but intimidated or confused by instructions? In this workshop, you’ll learn one-color and two-color brioche stitch. After two hours of doing brioche, you will feel like a master and will be ready to take on more complex brioche projects if you like. The workshop includes a detailed photo tutorial on working brioche stitch and suggestions for avoiding and fixing mistakes in brioche stitch. We also will discuss how colors interact in brioche stitch.

The workshop is based on the Rothko Cowl pattern, which showcases the interactions among three colors in brioche stitch.

Skills needed: Knitting, purling, and working in the round

Techniques covered: One-color and two-color brioche stitch, lifelines, and color interactions in brioche

Materials needed:

Three colors of worsted-weight yarn: 100 yards, 150 yards, and 200 yards

24-inch circular needles in Size 6, 7, and 8. We will use only the Size 8 in class.

Stitch marker

Tapestry needle (for lifelines and troubleshooting)

Homework:

Come with at least one color of yarn wound, ready to knit! If you would like to choose your second and third colors at the shop after you see examples of color interaction, no problem! Or, bring a bunch of yarns from your stash.

About Ann Weaver

When Ann Weaver is not traveling to teach or exploring thrift stores and estate sales, you will find her in West Baltimore, where she works as a freelance editor and writer and runs Plied Yarns. Knitting, mending, dyeing, sewing, and piecing—she uses all her skills to inspire her students in her laid-back, individualized workshops.

My teaching style is low-stakes, hands-on, and individualized.

About Plied Yarn Co

Plied is a yarn line that Karida Collins (Neighborhood Fiber Co.) and Ann Weaver (weaverknits) conceived when touring the Harrisville Designs mill in New Hampshire. North Ave is their first yarn: a 100% wool, two-ply, woolen spun, fingering weight yarn, spun at Harrisville and hand-dyed in Baltimore.

North Ave is a major east-west artery in Baltimore and the location of many cultural landmarks in the city. It is part of old Route 1, so before I95 was built, it was the way people traveled all along the east coast, from Florida to Maine. Additionally, it used to be the northern boundary of the city—everything north of that was the suburbs! For much of Baltimore's early history, North Ave was a thriving center of arts and business, but it fell into disrepair in the second half of the twentieth century. Today, the city has designated sections of North Ave as Arts and Entertainment districts, which is driving revitalization.

To celebrate the city of Baltimore—both its past and its current developments—Plied colors are named for Baltimore traditions, locations, and personalities.
